[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: America is more heat- and bolt-resistant than many traditional spinach varieties but remains fundamentally a cool-season crop. Sow very early in spring and again in late summer for fall harvest.
Germination: Spinach can germinate slowly in very cold soil and rapidly around 70-75ยฐF, but germination percentage declines as soil becomes too warm.
Harvest: Harvest outer leaves individually or cut whole plants before bolting. America is suited to fresh eating, freezing and canning.
Seed Saving: Spinach is wind-pollinated and plants are male or female. Substantial isolation from other flowering spinach varieties is required for pure seed.
Special Care: America is also known as American Long Standing. It is a slow-bolting Bloomsdale-type spinach noted for better heat and drought tolerance than many older spinach varieties.
