[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Genovese basil is frost-sensitive. For Southeast Michigan, start indoors about 6 weeks before planting out and wait until approximately 2 weeks after the May 5 frost date for warm outdoor conditions.
Germination: Germinates in 5-10 days at 65-70°F. Indoor starts perform well around 70°F.
Harvest: Begin harvesting after plants are established. Pinch above leaf nodes to encourage branching. Make full harvests before flowering for best leaf quality and flavor.
Seed Saving: Genovese is open-pollinated, so properly isolated plants can produce true-to-type seed. Allow flower spikes to mature and dry completely before collecting seed.
Special Care: Regular moisture is important. Genovese basil can develop basil downy mildew; good airflow and avoiding prolonged leaf wetness can reduce disease pressure.
