[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: The seed name 'Rosehips' does not identify a Rosa species or cultivar, so species-specific spacing, height and germination values cannot be assigned reliably. Many cold-hardy hip-producing roses are suitable for Zone 6B.
Germination: Rose seed commonly has dormancy requiring cold stratification, but treatment length varies by species. Rosa rugosa seed, for example, is documented to benefit from approximately 60 days of moist refrigeration.
Harvest: Harvest hips after they develop their mature red, orange or species-specific ripe color. Hips can be used for tea, jelly and other preparations. Remove irritating internal hairs and seeds when appropriate for the preparation.
Seed Saving: Remove seeds from ripe hips and clean them thoroughly. Cold treatment is commonly required before germination. Seed-grown roses may differ substantially from the parent plant, especially if the parent was a hybrid.
Special Care: Because 'Rosehips' describes the fruit rather than a botanical species, values that differ significantly among rose species are intentionally left null.
