Notes

Original Planting Method: Start indoors strongly recommended
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: May 20 โ€“ Jun 1
Days to Harvest / Bloom: 120โ€“180 days
Container Friendly: Not ideal; very large container only
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Useful dried sponge; young fruit edible
Succession / Reusable Notes: Start indoors early. Direct sowing is usually too risky in Zone 6B.
Zone 6B Notes: Needs the longest season in this spreadsheet.
Companion Plants: Beans, corn, marigolds, nasturtiums, sunflowers nearby
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Crowded beds

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Luffa is a very long-season tropical vine. Starting indoors is strongly preferred in Southeast Michigan. Transplant only after nights and soil are warm. The season may need to be extended in fall to mature sponge-quality fruit.
Germination: Seed can germinate slowly and unevenly. Soaking in warm water for about 24 hours and maintaining 75-90ยฐF soil can improve germination.
Harvest: Harvest young fruit for eating. For sponge use, allow fruit to fully mature and dry on the vine until skin browns and the interior becomes fibrous.
Seed Saving: Allow mature fruit to dry completely. Remove dry seeds from the mature sponge. Luffa can cross with other plants of the same species.
Special Care: Provide a very strong trellis. Avoid root disturbance when transplanting. Plants cannot survive frost.
