Notes
Original Planting Method: Seed usually needs cold-moist stratification before sowing; seedlings can be transplanted after establishment
Original Last Suggested Planting Date: Mar 15 for beginning stratification for a spring sowing
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: Plant/transplant outdoors about Apr 15 โ Jun 15 after stratified seed germinates
Germination Time: Often about 21โ42 days after 8โ12 weeks of cold-moist stratification; germination can be uneven
Days to Harvest / Bloom: Seed-grown shrubs usually take multiple seasons to reach mature flowering size
Container Friendly: Possible in a very large permanent container
Pollinator Friendly: Yes; flowers attract bees and butterflies; hips feed wildlife
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Rose hips are traditionally used as food/herbal material when correctly identified and pesticide-free
Perennial?: Yes; hardy perennial shrub
Succession / Reusable Notes: No succession needed. Remove suckers/hips if unwanted spread is a concern; prune as needed after establishment.
Zone 6B Notes: Cold-hardy in Zone 6B. Give it room and monitor suckering/spread.
Companion Plants: Lavender, catmint, chives and other sun-loving plants that tolerate good drainage
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Very thorny and spreads by suckers. Rosa rugosa is invasive or restricted in some regions, especially coastal habitats; check local guidance before planting. Avoid constantly wet soil.

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Rosa rugosa is extremely cold hardy and readily survives Zone 6B. It can spread by suckers and should be planted where expansion is acceptable.
Germination: Rugosa rose seed requires cold stratification before germination and may germinate irregularly over an extended period.
Harvest: Fragrant flowers are followed by large orange-red hips. Hips are commonly harvested after frost for tea, syrup, jelly or other culinary use.
Seed Saving: Remove seed from ripe hips, clean thoroughly and cold-stratify before sowing. Seedlings may vary from the parent shrub.
Special Care: The supplied spelling 'Augosa (beach)' is preserved; it is interpreted as Rosa rugosa, commonly called beach rose or rugosa rose.
