Notes

Original Planting Method: Direct sow; provide tall trellis
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: Mar 20 โ€“ May 1; Jul 15 โ€“ Jul 25 for fall crop
Germination Time: About 7โ€“14 days
Container Friendly: Yes, large/deep container with tall trellis
Pollinator Friendly: Somewhat; peas are mostly self-pollinating but bees may visit
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Culinary snap pea
Perennial?: No; annual
Succession / Reusable Notes: A second spring sowing 10โ€“14 days later can extend harvest; a late-July fall crop is possible.
Zone 6B Notes: Plant very early for spring; stop once summer heat arrives, then try again for fall.
Companion Plants: Lettuce, carrots, radishes, spinach
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Vines can reach about 6โ€“7+ ft and need sturdy support. Summer heat reduces flowering and pod set.

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked in spring. A second crop may be attempted in midsummer for fall harvest. The tall vines require sturdy support.
Germination: Sow approximately 1 inch deep in cool soil. Germination generally occurs within about 5-10 days under favorable conditions.
Harvest: Harvest purple snap pods while crisp and tender. Pea shoots and abundant tendrils are also edible.
Seed Saving: Sugar Magnolia is open-pollinated. Peas are primarily self-pollinating, although occasional crossing can occur.
Special Care: Sugar Magnolia was bred by Alan Kapuler and is notable for purple pods, bicolored flowers and unusually tendril-rich vines.
