Notes

Original Planting Method: Direct sow
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: Apr 1 โ€“ May 1; Jul 20 โ€“ Aug 20
Days to Harvest / Bloom: About 50โ€“60 days
Container Friendly: Yes, 12โ€“18+ in deep
Pollinator Friendly: Low when harvested; flowers attract insects if allowed to bolt
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Culinary root
Perennial?: No; grown as an annual
Succession / Reusable Notes: A second fall sowing 1โ€“2 weeks after the first can extend harvest.
Zone 6B Notes: Fall planting is usually the best fit in Zone 6B for smooth, mild roots.
Companion Plants: Lettuce, peas, spinach, cilantro
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Needs deep, loose soil; compacted or rocky soil can deform long roots. Hot weather can reduce quality.

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Daikon can be spring sown, but late-summer sowing for a cool fall harvest is often especially successful. Avoid the hottest portion of summer.
Germination: Direct sow because transplanting can damage the long taproot and cause forked roots.
Harvest: Most daikon types mature approximately 50-65 days after sowing. Harvest before severe freezing and before roots become excessively fibrous.
Seed Saving: Daikon crosses with other Raphanus sativus radishes. Allow selected plants to flower and mature dry seed pods.
Special Care: The packet identifies only the general Daikon type rather than a named cultivar, so exact root dimensions and cultivar-specific maturity are not assigned beyond the documented species/type range.
