Notes
Original Planting Method: Direct sow where it will grow. Dill develops a taproot and does not love transplanting.
Original Start Planting Date: Apr 10 or when soil is workable/cool
Original Last Suggested Planting Date: ~Aug 1 for seed heads; ~Aug 25 for fresh leaves
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: Direct sow ~Apr 10 โ Aug 25. Earlier sowings are best for full-size plants/seed production.
Days to Harvest / Bloom: Leaves earlier; ~65โ70 days to maturity/seed production
Container Friendly: Yes; deep 12โ18+ in container; staking may help
Pollinator Friendly: Yes; excellent when flowering; host plant for black swallowtail
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Yes; culinary herb with traditional herbal uses. Not medical guidance.
Perennial?: No; often self-seeds
Succession / Reusable Notes: Sow every 2โ3 weeks for steady fresh leaves. Let some plants flower/set seed for pollinators and possible self-seeding.
Zone 6B Notes: Very easy in Zone 6B. Start in cool spring weather and repeat sowings through summer; dropped seed may return next year.
Companion Plants: Cucumbers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, onions
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Keep some distance from carrots if both are flowering. Tall plants can lean in wind. Black swallowtail caterpillars may eat foliage; beneficial wildlife.

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. Repeat sowings every 2-3 weeks for continued leaf production. Mammoth is particularly useful for flower heads and mature seed for pickling.
Germination: Dill germinates in approximately 7-21 days at 65-70ยฐF. Direct sowing is preferred because dill develops a taproot and dislikes transplanting.
Harvest: Harvest foliage as needed before flowering. Harvest flower umbels for pickling when flowers or young seed begin developing, or allow seed heads to brown for mature dill seed.
Seed Saving: Allow umbels to turn brown and dry. Cut heads into paper bags and thresh once completely dry. Dill can cross with other dill varieties.
Special Care: Mammoth dill can reach 3-5 feet and may benefit from a sheltered location in strong wind.
