Notes

Original Planting Method: Direct sow; peas dislike root disturbance. Provide a sturdy trellis because Sugar Snap vines grow tall.
Original Start Planting Date: Mar 25 or as soon as soil can be worked
Original Last Suggested Planting Date: ~Aug 1 for fall crop; finish spring sowing by ~May 1
Outdoor / Direct Sow / Transplant Window: Main spring direct-sow window: Mar 25 โ€“ May 1. Optional fall sowing: ~Jul 25 โ€“ Aug 1.
Container Friendly: Yes; large/deep container + sturdy trellis
Pollinator Friendly: Somewhat; mostly self-pollinating, bees may visit
Medicinal / Herbal Use: Culinary vegetable
Succession / Reusable Notes: One planting can produce for several weeks. Optional second sowing 10โ€“14 days later; fall crop can be tried in late Jul/early Aug.
Zone 6B Notes: Excellent cool-season crop for Zone 6B. Plant very early in spring. Summer heat reduces production; fall peas need an early start.
Companion Plants: Carrots, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, low cool-season crops
Avoid Planting Near / Watch Outs: Heat reduces flowering/pod set. Avoid waterlogged soil and repeated pea planting in the same spot; rotate legumes.

[[RESEARCH ENRICHMENT START]]
Zone 6B: Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked in early spring. For a fall attempt, sow about 2 months before the October 15 first frost and keep seed well watered during hot late-summer weather.
Germination: Pea seed generally germinates in about 7-10 days. Install the trellis at planting time to avoid disturbing roots later.
Harvest: Harvest when pods are plump, crisp and rounded but still tender. Pods and peas are both edible.
Seed Saving: Allow pods to dry completely on the vine. Peas are predominantly self-pollinating, so crossing is uncommon but possible.
Special Care: Original Sugar Snap is a tall vine and requires strong support. Powdery mildew may become a problem during warm late-season weather.
